As a working member of the IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage employees), I’ve been bombarded with propaganda from the studios about the “grass-roots” efforts to fight piracy online.
However, as an Officer of my Local, I have spoken out against SOPA and PIPA as they are quite parallel to the USA Patriot Act in it’s veiled swipe at civil rights, freedom of speech and privacy.
The Studios formed a group called “Creative America”, labeled as a grass roots effort. This group was formed by the giant multi-nationals, then added in the cooperation of the industry’s labor Unions and guilds to co-opt the workers under the guise of protecting our lost wages and jobs.
True that the Labor Unions have sadly tied their benefits to residuals from entertainment product. But these studios are the very Corporations that outsource Film production mercilessly to other
States or nations to increase their profits.
The media Giants cry foul and demand the support and collaboration of the rank and file workers that they have been abandoning for decades…
