Good Grief – Who’s Going to Cover LA Now?

We wanted you to be the first to know about this year’s event. We’re focusing on a local issue: the LA Times. With the paper possibly looking at new ownership as its parent company emerges from bankruptcy, will a rumored buyout by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. or the Koch Brothers improve the paper’s news coverage? Would a different merger, sale, or consolidation better serve the community? If not, how will Angelenos get their local government news coverage – what will be the consequences of that shift?

This half day summit will study these issues and bring to light new ideas for how to make LA news better.

Tuesday, November 13 and Wednesday, November 14 Pacifica Radio Stations KPFA, KPFK, KPFT, WBAI and WPFW will devote their broadcast days to historic programs from the Pacifica Radio Archives.

Adrienne Rich reads her poems, twenty year old Bob Dylan introduces his new songs, James Baldwin, Dolores Huerta, Malcolm X, Ray Bradbury — the real and crazy mix and mash up of the latter half of the twentieth century.

It’s history. It’s inspiration. It’s revolution. Don’t miss excerpts from the 1974 marathon reading of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina with the voices of Henry Fonda, Penny Marshall, Jack Klugman, George Segal, Tony Randall, Rob Reiner, and many others: http://www.pacificaradioarchives.org

If you’re inspired to donate, know that you are matching NEA and other funds to preserve and digitize exceptional programs (maybe even your own). A contribution to the Campus Campaign brings a collection of key historic tapes to the public library or college of your choice, and a copy for you to keep. Help save the past of Public/Community Radio for the Future!

In the spirit of furthering understanding and communication within and between our many communities LA Indymedia brings Film-Night back with the film “Precious Knowledge”.

Oct 14, 2012 at 7:00pm

Location: 2511 s Barrington, #100 at Gateway Blvd. Los Angeles, CA

“Precious Knowledge” is an important documentary that exposes the blatant racism that the State Superintendent of Education in Arizona recently displayed in cutting out the successful ethnic-studies program at Tucson High School. The film follows the lives of four students and several teachers as they fight to save their classes and the program that became an educational lifeline for them.

The disenfranchised high school seniors became academic warriors and community leaders in the face of losing a successful program that has become a national model of success. In a climate where the national average of Mexican-American drop-outs is 45 percent, 100 percent of the students enrolled in the Tucson High ethnic studies classes graduated from high school and 85 percent of them went on to college.

The filmmakers spent an entire year in the classroom filming this innovative social-justice curriculum, documenting the transformative impact on students who become engaged, informed, and active in their communities. This story is important to all of us; as Americans and as Angelinos. In our city Ron Gochez, a high school social studies teacher and important activist, currently running for city council, was recently fired for teaching ethnic-studies courses in his South LA classroom.

Come join LA Indymedia, in conjunction with the Gateway-Portal in West LA for our screening of the film with a discussion afterward. We will pass the hat …but of course everyone is welcome. Feel free to bring a snack to share
